World VR Competition coming to Oculus Home, and full release

Postby TheeLord » Fri Sep 30, 2016 4:22 pm

Hi everyone! I hope everyone's doing great! I just wanted to drop in here and say that we have not forgotten about Factions, however we are very busy supporting World VR Competition and working to bring it to the Oculus Rift. It has met quite a bit of good feedback from people that have tried the game, but there is quite a bit to improve on before we launch on Oculus Home and leave early access.

We also did not get the resources we hoped for from sales of World VR Competition. We have decided to pursue a larger project (similar but quite different to Factions) that will directly impact the production of Factions since it is also an MMO with many similarities to Factions but on a more manageable scope. We will use a lot of the new techniques we are learning and code we are writing for Factions. More information will probably be released on this game in about 6-12 months depending on how fast we can get something playable and decent looking together.

Factions is all of our dream game, we will get back to it, but we need to make sure we are fully prepared and we do it correctly.. (otherwise, what's the point right?) So much of the fun of Factions will depend on there being enough of an active population to support all the activities in the game. If it's not awesome people just won't play it in the numbers we need, and then even those of you who can look past some visual drawbacks or bugs won't be able to have a good time because the gameplay isn't there without a healthy population. If there's one thing that listening to feedback of World VR Competition has taught me, is that people are obsessive over graphics and visual polish. Much more then I had realized. We need to make sure every aspect of our games is good, not just the gameplay. I hope this all makes sense, it was a hard decision. But I think it is in our best interest as a company and the best interests of everyone who wants Factions to succeed in the long run.

It's been 8 years since I started work on Factions, I won't ever give up on that dream, but I'll be damned if it's not done to near perfection when it is finally done.

Thank you all for your continued support!

I'm sure making the call was difficult, but it is understandable. As an independent coder, I know it's sometimes just best to put more difficult projects on the burner and work your way up to them with smaller successes.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to seeing any progress you release on the game once it's deemed ready for showing!

Thanks Khranos, these are very difficult choices, I'm confident it's the right direction though. We just can't afford Factions not to be near perfect. To do that we need more resources.

greets
"it would separate this project from others because the devs are cool and have a clue :-)"
